For a lot of people walking into an MMA gym can be intimidating, you see a bunch of sweaty guys trying to either strangle each other or punch each other in the face. It is alot for anyone to take in trust me, I've been there. But fear not, I’m here to prepare you for your first Muay Thai class. What is Muay Thai? If you think Muay Thai is a fruity drink you have on the beach in Hawaii, don’t worry you’re not alone. This is a very common question and understandably so. Muay Thai or 'Thai boxing', is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is also known as the "art of eight limbs" since it utilizes punches, elbows, knees, and kicks. History of Muay Thai Where did Muay Thai come from? Of course, the obvious answer being simply “Thailand” still doesn’t answer why, and how it was formed. Historically, what many regard as the most devastating of the striking arts has its roots embedded in the country’s formative years, and on the battlefield. Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the late-20th to 21st century, when Westernized practitioners from Thailand began competing in kickboxing and mixed rules matches as well as matches under muay Thai rules around the world. The professional league is governed by The Professional Boxing Association of Thailand (P.A.T), sanctioned by The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT). Nashville MMA We offer a combination of traditional Muay Thai and Dutch Kickboxing here at Nashville MMA. The combination of these two styles is what is most commonly used in MMA. A typical class starts by lining up and bowing in. Once you bow in, you get started with a warmup. Warmups usually involve some sort of jog/bodyweight exercise then either shadowboxing or bag work. After you are nice and warm, it's time to learn some technique. Everyone of our coaches has a style that is unique to them, by trying as many classes as possible you will find what works for you. You’ll partner off and drill the techniques your coach showed you for about 20-30 minutes, the coach will be walking around to help and adding on to the technique. After drilling you usually end with a final round or two of conditioning and ab work. With that you’ve completed your first Muay Thai class at Nashville MMA!
