Jiu jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and grappling techniques. It was developed from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and adapted by the Gracie family in Brazil. Brazilian jiu jitsu emphasizes leverage, technique, and submissions to overcome larger and stronger opponents, making it particularly effective for self-defense.
Join us at Nashville MMA Training Camp and train Brazilian jiu jitsu. Self-defense, competition, or the fundamentals for the first time: the program covers it for men and women across Nashville. Fill out the short form below to learn more.
BJJ gives you self-defense that works on leverage and control, not size. For competitors, it is a strategic sport that tests body and mind in equal measure.
In jiu jitsu, students will learn a wide array of techniques such as joint locks, chokes, sweeps, and positional control. Jiu jitsu places a strong emphasis on timing, strategy, and body mechanics, allowing practitioners to effectively neutralize an opponent's strength and size advantage.
Our jiu jitsu program is led by 3rd degree black belt and founder of Matrix Jiu-Jitsu, Bryan Tidwell. His curriculum covers every level, built on fundamental movement and technique and on the modern game he teaches through his Matrix style.
We offer several Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for every level:
Self-defense, competition, or just getting good at something hard: beginners are welcome in every jiu jitsu class.
Built for beginners and for anyone who wants their foundation tighter. You learn the essential techniques, positions, and movements from the ground up.
Our BJJ Intermediate class is open to everyone from beginners to experienced practitioners. It mixes fundamentals with advanced technique across positions, submissions, sweeps, and transitions.

We also run women-only jiu jitsu classes. Check the schedule for current times.
Yes. Nashville MMA Training Camp offers BJJ Fundamentals classes that teach the positions, movements, escapes, submissions, and training habits beginners need. You can start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Nashville with no previous grappling or martial arts experience.
Gi BJJ is practiced in a traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform that can be used for grips and control. No-Gi BJJ is trained in athletic clothing or a rash guard and shorts, with grips focused on the body instead of the uniform. Both build grappling, control, submission, and self-defense skills, and many students train both.
BJJ classes can include live rolling, but coaches control the structure and intensity of training. Beginners should focus on technique, safe movement, and communication with their partners. If you are unsure about live training, tell your coach before class so they can help you train at an appropriate pace.
For a Gi class, wear a clean Gi and belt. For No-Gi, wear fitted athletic clothing such as a rash guard and shorts without pockets, zippers, or exposed hardware. Trial students should ask the front desk about available loaner gear before class.
No. Adults start BJJ at many different ages and fitness levels. The key is to begin with Fundamentals classes, train consistently, and increase your pace as your conditioning and technique improve.
Yes. BJJ teaches leverage, positional control, escapes, takedown awareness, and submissions while providing a demanding full-body workout. Many students train because they want practical grappling skills, better conditioning, or a new competitive challenge.
